Storm Whale

The Storm Whale by Benji Davies. Published by Simon and Schuster

A heart warming story about a lonely little boy making friends with a storm whale. Noi lives with his dad and his cats by the sea. One day he finds a whale washed up on the sands and a wonderful friendship begins. Not looks after the whale, telling him stories, playing him music and feeding him. He toys to keep the whale a secret from his dad but it does not last.  Noi is persuaded to take the whale back where it belongs, but its hard saying good bye to his friend.  A beautiful and touching story with striking and atmospheric illustrations.

The illustrations have a lovely texture and the colours communicate the atmosphere well. Detailed page spreads with lots of depth and fantastic angles and viewpoints. The double page spreads of the beach scenes are beautiful and draws your eye into the pages. The rhythm and pacing in the book is great with some pages in full colour followed by pages with more white space.children will love to spot all of Noi's cats within the pages and have fun looking at all the little details within the book. From cosy beach hut scenes to striking scenes of the sea this book is visually engaging and a joy to read.

The text is clear and easy to read and children can follow along with the words while looking at the pictures. Children will also love the second book ' The Storm Whale in Winter' by Benji Davies.

A great read with a lovely message about friendship.
